Dolly Liu and Jasmine Lei were two childhood friends growing up in an unprecedented technologically advanced society. As the years went by, instant messaging, social media feeds, and emails became the new norm for communication. As they grew older, they believed that the world had lost the simple enjoyment of sending and receiving a card.
Going through elementary, the girls’ favourite activity was the implementation of a pen-pal, where a piece of paper and pen could connect people from across the world. The overwhelming buildup of anticipation and constantly waiting to hear from their pal kept a smile on their faces. Jasmine and Dolly loved the concept of card-giving and wondered why pen-pals must be limited to children, and thus the idea of Cards For a Cause was born.
These two high school students wanted to spread the excitement felt by little boys and girls to senior residents and frontline workers, allowing their days to be brightened with heartfelt messages and handmade cards. These girls took a small, pleasant memory and turned it into something more that could affect men and women of all ages across Calgary.
Cards For a Cause officially launched on November 21st, 2020, and the girls hope to keep spreading their initiative to more communities across Alberta.
